March 3rd, 2021 Update
Hello Friends for Equity!
We are happy to report that our letter was sent last week on February 24th to every member of the Avon Board of Education and the superintendent. A copy of the finalized letter can be found on the ‘Resources’ page. It was signed by 56 Avon parents and residents, including the president of the Avon High School PTO.
The BOE chair responded expressing gratitude for the support we are offering and the acknowledgement that a “commitment from the larger community is needed for Avon to continue making progress in pursuit of equity for our growing culturally diverse town”. Our superintendent is also very supportive and welcomes collaboration with our group. The letter will be read into the record as public comment during the March 16th BOE meeting. We will forward the link to this March 16th BOE meeting when available should you wish to attend.
We have invited Avon residents who are individual members of the BOE to our (virtual) information session scheduled for March 23rd at 7pm. As a co-signer and/or supporter, we would like to invite (and encourage) you to attend the information session on March 23rd. Our agenda will include an introduction to Friends for Equity in Avon Schools; why we believe the work towards diversity, equity and inclusion in Avon Public Schools is important; an overview of the progress being made in surrounding school districts; a few words from collaborating partners; time for Q&A; and discussion of next steps.
Please reply to this email if you wish to attend the meeting on March 23rd and we’ll be sure to send you the link.
Team, we are excited! There is strong support in our community to make equity work in our schools a priority and momentum is building. It will take all of us, together, to make the change. THANK YOU for standing up for all of our kids and community.
